Last year

Wow. I have to say I was surprised to see how long it’s been since I last posted. So much has happened and I have tried on several occasions to write about it with no luck. In some ways it feels like too much to write about now. How could I possibly sum up a year in a single post or even multiple posts at this point? But in the last couple of weeks I've realized how much I get from writing this blog and then being able to check back in and read about those things. So I'm going to just jump back in with a summary of last year. (Warning: this is a really long post)

Today I am 30 weeks pregnant. Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of finding out that our first baby no longer had a heartbeat. We only knew of her for two weeks and yet it was enough. (I felt in my heart that she was a girl so that's how I refer to her). Up until that point, our year had been fairly normal. We were going to start fertility treatments until we found out I was pregnant. I heard her heartbeat and looked that up on the internet - everything said once you hear a heartbeat you're usually good. Usually.

After that day in February, the husband and I continued on as usual with work but that was about it. For the next two or so months we did pretty much nothing. The grief was hard and lonely, isolating. I will forever be grateful that I worked at a grief center during that time. The executive director and now my dear friend was a crucial support for me.

We met with our doctor about two weeks after the miscarriage and we knew it was too soon. In a lot of ways though I wanted to push forward with treatments. A part of me felt like if we were not going to be able to have children, I wanted to get the pain out of the way all in one year. And so at the end of April we started our first round of IVF. I was determined to get through that process and so I gave myself shots for 11 days like a champ. When it was over I remember thinking that it hadn't been that bad. As a result of our fertility issues and the miscarriage, we opted to freeze any embryos and have them genetically tested for viability.

IVF round 1 - daily shots organized in boxes with all the necessary materials - each day required mixing of lots of meds

On our four year anniversary we found out that of the three embryos frozen, all three had significant genetic issues that would have resulted in unsuccessful implantations or miscarriages. We spent the evening sitting on our back porch absorbing the news.

About two weeks later, on the first Friday of June, the husband had an interview in Raleigh and about a week later he got the job offer. He had his eye on NC jobs and we were both thrilled to find out we would be moving back later in the year: thrilled and overwhelmed by the amount of stuff we needed to get done before his start day of August 1.

From that point forward, our summer was a whirlwind. Between the day he accepted the offer (June 13) and the day we left Houston for NC (August 15) we:
  • Worked on some areas of the house that needed to be updated before we put the house on the market
  •  Put the house on the market and accepted a full offer on the third day
  • Traveled to NC to house hunt for four days
  • Did another round of IVF
  • Spent time with friends in Houston to say our good-byes
  • Did a frozen embryo transfer which included three days of bed rest for me

I knew it would be hectic to try to do another IVF cycle and possibly an embryo transfer but at the same time I knew that if this round didn’t work, I likely would not do another fertility treatment. The second IVF round was awful compared to the first. I hated every minute of it and instead of pushing through without thinking about it, I spent 30 minutes to an hour every night trying to convince myself to take the three, sometimes four shots. In this case convincing looked a lot like sitting on the floor in my closet, crying. My first round of IVF involved two shots nightly until 2/3 of the way through when I added a third shot. My second round of IVF involved one morning shot and three nightly shots to start with and about half way through I moved to two morning shots and four nightly shots.

We found out that four embryos were successfully frozen on the Friday we were in NC looking for houses. The following week we received the news that three of the four were genetically viable. The last week of July I started the process involved in a frozen embryo transfer cycle which is essentially more shots and more hormones.

We had two embryos transferred on August 11. I was on bed rest through the 13th and we left Houston for NC on the 15th. We closed on our house in Cary on August 20 and found out that day that my hormone levels were high enough to indicate the likelihood of a pregnancy.

Of course, things didn’t get easy from there. The house had some major plumbing issues so we didn’t actually move in until August 29th and once we were in the house we had to wait for drywall work to be completed before we could do much.

We got the early confirmation of the pregnancy the week after we moved into the house, on September 2 at our first ultrasound. That’s also when we found out that both of the embryos were successfully implanted and when I started to feel very sick. There is a lot that I want to write about the experience of this pregnancy but I will save that for a later post.

5 weeks

Most of the fall was a blur with the first trimester essentially kicking my butt and the second trimester starting off about the same. We went from a whirlwind couple of months in the summer to a complete stop in the fall. I literally did the very bare minimum I could to make it through the days.

We ended this crazy year right where we needed to be – celebrating the holidays with our families and spending time with friends. It was difficult to figure out what to share here and how so I often deferred to writing nothing at all. And yet, the experiences of this past year deserve some space here. While I have more I can write about everything, and I likely will at some point, it’s important to start somewhere.

Our first home

I'm not sure what's going to happen to this little blog in the next year or so but for now I think I'll randomly post when I have some time. As many of you know we are moving back to North Carolina. We are both excited and sad. Had we moved a year ago, I think I would have been a lot less sad about leaving but in this last year so much has happened that has made me truly love Houston. I never thought I would say that. Of course, I know I love North Carolina more and we are more than thrilled to be soooo close to almost all of the people in the world whom we love and care about.

Anyways, I'm sure I'll write another post about moving but for now I wanted to post the pictures of our house from the real estate site. The photographer did a really nice job and made our house look pretty awesome if I do say so myself! :) I do love this house - we were so fortunate that our very first house was such a great home for us.

Master Bathroom Remodel: The end is near

A quick HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the husband!! We took a little time out of our busy weekend to celebrate his birthday last night. He rocks and has really done so much awesomeness in the bathroom. I'm super lucky to have him as a partner in crime (and everything else)!!

Don't get too excited - when I say the end is near I mean that our deadline is only three weeks away!  Scary! We have definitely made some good progress but we still have a decent amount to do. The month of October was out of control. The husband was home 11 days total. That only made working on the bathroom slightly challenging (sarcasm). Plus my schedule was kind of ridiculous too. Suffice it to say FLEXIBILITY is the word of the month for October and November.

Despite our schedule issues, we accomplished a ton in the month of October and this past weekend. Here's where we are now:

Tiling is 85% complete. We need to finish the half wall and around the tub. Then we need to grout. The plan is to have the husband finish the tiling this week. I will be out of town Thursday through Sunday so we plan to grout (definitely a two-person job) the week after I get back.

The counter top guys came and installed the counter top and the ledges in the shower area. Yay!!! (Please excuse the mess that goes along with our construction zone)

We demoed the closet, patched and cleaned up the walls, and painted. It was a lot of work but it looks a lot nicer now in all of it's cleanliness. (There once was an ugly shelf where the ladder is below - you would never know now!)

We planned our new closet organization system and had a date night trip to Ikea this past Saturday night - dinner included. I am most definitely ready for normal weekend nights full of things other than busting our asses. (I lovingly refer to this kind of paper as checkerboard paper)

And just to remind you of the floor, here's a picture of the closet floor. The husband is pretty amazingly talented (and patient)!

We don't have a ton of stuff left in the bathroom but the timing is a little challenging to get it all accomplished. We need the carpet in the bedroom and closet installed before we can start working on the closet - that will happen sometime this week or next.

It will be a busy November but totally worth it. And since it's our family birthday month (mine, the husband's, and both dogs), it will indeed be a wonderful birthday present for us all we we finish it! Shadow will be happy she doesn't have to follow me around the construction zone and Gracie will be happy for the quiet.

Our master bathroom

It's that time folks! We are t-minus 2 days from starting the remodel of our master bathroom! I am both excited and SUPER anxious! (I thought I would mention the anxiety in case you couldn't tell from my overuse of exclamation points!) This is a big project and we are going to do most of the work. Eek. But for reals, the husband is super handy and occasionally I am too so I think we can handle it. The main question is whether our marriage can handle it! :)  I'll keep you posted!

As a reminder of the current state of our bathroom, here are a few pictures!

Here's a bit of info on our planning process and I'll keep the blog updated as we move through the various projects.

Planning:
We mulled over the plan for a LONG time (and when I say we, I almost 100% of the time mean ME). We considered what seems like a ton of options but really it came down to three options:
Option 1: Keep the same foot print and replace everything but the tub
Option 2: Remove the linen closet and extend the shower into the linen closet space making the overall shower ginormous. Keep the remaining footprint the same and replace everything but the tub
Option 3:  Remove the linen closet, essentially move the shower over and extend it's size a bit but only so much as to have enough room for a new free standing tub. Keep the remaining footprint the same and replace everything

And we chose option #1! The main reason was cost. Removing the linen closet would mean a large increase in the cost of materials and we would have to move the shower plumbing. The current footprint isn't bad so leaving it is one huge way to save money.

Materials:
After browsing too many bathroom photos to count and visiting several tile stores we (I) finally decided on the materials. Here are some of the photos I used for inspiration:

My favorite bathroom - inspiration for the general feel and colors

Inspiration for shower tile and half wall of tile
picture from Creative Homebody

The shower will have white subway tile with a chair rail that runs through the middle much like the above photo. Our bathroom does not have the same layout as the one above so the chair rail will only be around our tub.

We are going to use a gray 6x20 tile in a herringbone pattern on the floor - the tile in the background of the picture below. We are going to use a small carrara marble hex for the shower floor and carrara marble for the counters.

We went with a set of Ikea cabinets for the vanity, which we purchased last weekend. We are updating the bathroom with new doors and replacing the door into the closet with a pocket door.

I'll share more about the finishing touches later. Here's hoping we only hit minor speed bumps along this trip! :)

Back to it

I think I am finally in a place where I can get back to blogging more. But really, who knows? Things have been quite busy over the last couple of months so here is a crazy update on what we've been up to.

  • We gardened as usual this year and had a great year - we were more on top of the bugs and our unusual spring gave all of our veggies a huge boost. We grew tomatoes, peppers and tomatillos. We also planted our herb garden and it has really taken off.

  • We drove to NC for a quick visit and to exchange cars. We bought my mom's 09 Accord and "sold" my wonderfully quirky 96 Corolla to my brother. That's right, I no longer own the car I've driven since my sophomore year in college. It was a sad day but there are some perks to having a working radio and automatic locks and windows! :) And since that old car got me through three colleges, I'm sure it will help my brother make it successfully through his MBA program.
  •  We painted the last room in our house! Woo-hoo! I love the color and I'm still amazed at the huge difference the new paint color makes in how the room feels.
Before and After

  • We remodeled a closet. Yep, not super exciting but the husband did a great job building the shelves and the closet is super functional for us now. We gutted the closet and added a full wall of shelves and a new clothes hanging area. You can see the closet empty and then filled to the brim below. One of the issues with living in a super hot place is that many items cannot be stored in the attic, thus this remodeled closet holds all of the items we would normally put in an attic.

  • And most recently we went to an amazing and fun wedding in Houston! Yay for not traveling for a wedding and having friends come down to visit!

The wedding after party decorations - awesome.

Next up this week: A review of our huge upcoming project!

Three Years

Life is funny.

I reread my year one anniversary summary and it reminded me of that. Year one of marriage, which was also year one of Texas living, was hard for me and the hubs. But really hard for me. Year two was a huge improvement in that area. I grew more comfortable with Texas life and together we worked harder to make things in Texas more enjoyable. Sometime late last year I realized that we reached a turning point related to the move here. It seems we FINALLY hit a stride with everything – our relationship, friends, the dogs, the garden, the house, work. It felt really good. That lasted about 2 months and then a new little twist occurred. The only constant in life is change, right?

And so here we are, celebrating our third year anniversary with new knowledge and that the upcoming year will likely include challenges greater than those we’ve faced in the past. While there remains a great deal of uncertainty in what lays ahead, what remains constant and true through this is the two of us. In celebration of our third year together, here is my annual list!
  1. We are both happier when we spend quality time with our friends – the difference after a night out with a friend or friends is tangible. Now only if we could get just a few more friends to move to Texas!
  2. I am more of a risk-taker than the husband. If you know me, this likely sounds a little crazy.
  3. The husband is slowly buying into (some) of my hippie ways (maybe he is getting better at compromising or he gave up and is letting me have my way)!
  4. We are improving our teamwork daily. Painting and gardening are two things we’re really good at as a team. Bug killing is another! :)
  5. In this last year we’ve started approaching housework a little more based on how much we like or dislike specific activities which seems to work out better (for the most part). For example, I now take more initiative to do the dishes because the husband HATES washing the dishes and I don’t mind. In return, the husband is doing more of some other things like taking out the compost or putting away dishes.
  6. The husband is naturally argumentative and enjoys playing the devil’s advocate (which seems more like antagonizing sometimes) and if you know him, you know the depth of this truth. I now anticipate having to defend my opinions and I find myself reading articles, etc with the goal of being able to defend my argument when he “plays devil’s advocate.”
  7. As a couple, we hit a bit of a slump last year. It wasn’t until my grandfather’s death that we sort of realized we were both holding onto some things and needed to let them go. We took that experience to heart and have worked on two things since: daily and weekly things we can do to check-in and stay in a good place as a couple and more proactive approaches to dealing with conflict so it doesn’t fester and lead to slumps. It seems to working better for now!
  8. Walking the dogs together used to be a pretty regular thing but as our schedules have increased in complexity, we have seen this fall by the wayside a bit. Now, we both really look forward to this simple activity!
  9. Related to the last one, as our lives become more complex I find myself feeling more protective of our time at home. Where a year or more ago I would often feel like I needed to do something almost all of the time at home, I no longer feel that way. I now approach our time at home with less pressure and more flexibility. This has been a good thing for both of us.
  10. Marriage is still hard but is so worth it.

Life, part two

Our (really my) poor little blog has seen a reduction in the everyday life updates as of late. Since beginning this little blog, I've occasionally questioned why I write in this space and who reads it, etc and usually come to the realization that it's mostly for me. I do like to provide updates for the family and friends who visit my blog space. The truth is though, I like being able to keep track of the everyday stuff in life. This little blog facilitates the documentation of our lives and because I prefer blogs with pictures, I find myself taking pictures of all the bits of our lives to include with the updates about the smaller-every-day-sort-of-things.

Then, there are times when those updates feel silly and meaningless, bordering on frivolous. The importance of curtain fabric or our bathroom remodel pale in comparison to other parts of life. And when you (my handful of blog readers) see fewer updates it is because a truly important part of life has taken center stage. And that's really where I've been the last few months - dealing with life.

For us, right now, life is a little different than what we imagined. After two and a half months of doctor's appointments, a medical procedure, and tons and tons of tests, we know this: becoming parents in the traditional way is not going to happen for us.

As we know that most of our readers are friends and family, we want you to know a few things.

First, we are ok. My last post describes all the reasons why we are ok. But you should know that this is the beginning of a new journey for the two of us, individually and as a couple, and we are taking our time with this knowledge. We have really hunkered down (don't you love that phrase?) as a family and tried to spend as much time over the last few weeks just being together, checking in, processing, and supporting one another.

Together, we are good. Individually, at this point and to be perfectly honest I would say the husband is fairing a bit better than me. Helping him are personal qualities and strengths that I do not have or am unable to access within myself right now. Through this process and other experiences in my life, I've learned that I like to know I'm moving forward - moving forward is what helps me manage life - and when I do not feel like I'm moving (when I feel stuck), it is harder for me. Right now I am not moving. The things I've done to try to help myself with this have not helped. I am sad. I want to talk about this and at the same time do not. I want people to know (I hate secrets) but I don't want the look or the pity. I thought knowing (the testing mentioned above) would help me but often it instead feels like a secret burden. You know, like I guess I'll keep going to work like I'm the same person, when clearly I'm not. I can feel this slow change process within myself and I'm scared and worried that the outcome of this process will be negative. I could literally say a thousand things here and not cover ALL of my thoughts and feelings.

I guess the second part of all of this is what's next for us as it relates to growing our family and this goes back to that feeling stuck thing I just mentioned. We are trying to work through how we think we want our family to look in the future and the remaining options for getting us to that point. We don't know exactly what's ahead for us and it looks like it will be some time before we make any decisions about that. These decisions are so very complicated and I anticipate it taking a good amount of time for us.

So there you have a snippet of things from us. We are simply here, living each day and trying to figure out what's next for us. I anticipate getting back to some regular blogging at some point but honestly I don't have it in me right now. I just don't seem to care about a lot of it right now AND I've been super busy with work. I'll be sure to do an update about some new professional stuff soon and about the bathroom as it is our main house thing this year.

Thanks, as always, for reading and supporting us! :)

Wow

I knew it had been awhile since my last post but good grief its been almost a month! I will say that the last few weeks have been a whirlwind. It feels like we haven't been super busy but when I look at what we've been up to it's actually a good amount.

After my last post, I traveled to the American Counseling Association conference in Cincinnati for four days. Basically that trip was just good for my soul. Leaving NC was hard for so many reasons but I've found the lack of collegial relationships with other counselors to be particularly difficult. Four days with some of my doctoral cohort and other UNCG students/grads wasn't nearly enough but it was so great spending time with them. I even convinced a UNC grad to go to the NC State NCAA game. Although it didn't end well, it was a fun a little side trip.

The husband left for San Antonio the Saturday before I got back from Cincinnati. The following weekend we worked to catch up on house stuff and had a Saturday full of social stuff that included a 2-year old birthday party, a crawfish boil and a wedding shower! And I did all of that with a full body rash - apparently I'm allergic to antibiotics!

This past week we headed to Baltimore Wednesday after a short two days of work. While Chip spent some time with his parents and friends, I did the tourist thing with my mom. The main reason for meeting my mom in Baltimore was to see Les Miserables. We had a great time and the show was truly amazing.

We have one more busy weekend ahead - the husband rides in the MS-150 this coming weekend - and then we're on a hiatus from travel, etc for awhile. We'll need the time to catch up on the house, garden, and plan for our master bathroom remodel!

Time flies

I'm a little late with this post - Friday was a bit of a doozy!

Ten years ago Friday (March 15) the husband and I started dating. We didn't exactly celebrate but it's a fun and kinda large milestone. In the spirit of ten years, I'm going to give you a glimpse into our life together since March 15, 2003.

In the last ten years
  • Separately, we lived in 13 apartments/homes, etc and together 1 apartment and 1 home
  • Thanks to stints in Greek housing, in that time we lived with more than 65 people
  • We attended at least 15 weddings
  • The husband comforted me through grieving the loss of three of my grandparents
  • We welcomed (from afar mostly and sadly) at least 10 babies of friends and family
  • We visited more than 15 cities and 3 countries together
  • We experienced one kraft american cheese slice fight
  • We got engaged and married :)
  • We adopted 1 extremely 'spirited' lovable dog, we fostered a dog who had to be put down, and then fostered and adopted a super loyal lovable dog
  • In the early years we hid notes for one another - on cars, in bags, etc - it was fun
  • We said "I love you tons" a ton
  • We painted too many square feet to count
  • We went from not liking vegetables much to growing our own vegetable garden
  • We went from velveeta and ramen to home cooked meals (although the husband still occasionally eats ramen)
  • We watched the sunrise a ton of times while driving to work together
  • We endured the challenge of moving away from our family and friends
  • We watched a lot of football, in person and on tv
  • We watched the rodeo twice
  • We attended a bunch of concerts: Fuel, Hootie, OAR, DMB, Eric Clapton, Nickelback, Kid Rock, Zac Brown Band, etc
  • We attended three plays and one Cirque du Soleil show
  • We listened to countless hours of Pandora
  • We celebrated four graduations between the two of us
Chip's graduation from NC State
  • We owned four cars, two of which we still own
  • We remodeled a half bath
  • We walked the dog(s) a ton
  • We drove from Texas to and from North Carolina three times
  • We argued and laughed and cried (mostly me) and joked and cursed (not at one another) and talked and smiled
  • We went to less than 10 movies in the theater
  • We went to two soccer games
  • We hung out with awesome friends

  • We cooked a ton of meals together that led to only a handful of arguments! :)
  • We spent good, fun time with our loving and wonderful families

  •  And of course, we made a ton of messes!
I am super lucky to have been introduced (thanks Jenn) to such a wonderful partner and to have spent the last 10 years with him. I can't wait to see what other messes we get into!
